Manitoba just got a little bit bigger, with the population growing by 14,007 people over the past year, said Competitiveness, Training and Trade Minister Andrew Swan today.
Manitoba’s population stood at 1,217,200 people as of April 1, according to a Statistics Canada report released Tuesday.
Swan said a record number of international immigrants is driving the increase. Manitoba welcomed more than 12,000 immigrants between April 2008 and April 2009.
The increase marks a new record in Manitoba since the current record-keeping system began in 1971. The last record-growth year was in 1983-84 when the population grew by 13,615.
Stats Canada estimates 9,300 more people came to live in Manitoba than left the province in the last 12 months. About 18,000 more people arrived from other jurisdictions than left during the last 24 months.
Canada’s population now stands at an estimated 33,592,700 — up 88,000 between Jan. 1 and April 1, 2009, according to the report.
