Woman in 50s contracts H1N1
Manitoba's second victim in hospital
WINNIPEG – A Winnipeg woman is Manitoba's second confirmed case of the H1N1 flu virus, health officials said Tuesday.
The woman, in her 50s and with a pre-existing medical condition, is being treated in hospital, Dr. Joel Kettner, Manitoba's chief provincial public health officer, said.
She had not travelled to Mexico and there is no evidence she had been in contact with someone who had travelled to Mexico.
Kettner said details about the woman, like her location and contacts she may have had, won't be released as there is nothing about her case that changes how people should manage their routines. "People shouldn't be afraid," he said, adding it's virtually impossible to eliminate exposure to the virus.
Kettner said the best defence against the virus is regular handwashing and maintaining good health.
Manitoba's first H1N1 flu case, reported more than a week ago, involved a young girl from Brandon. She did not require hospital care.
Health officials also said that, with the H1N1 flu virus present in Manitoba, more cases of H1N1 are expected to occur. Most are expected to be mild. Those with weakened immune systems and the very young or elderly are at risk of more severe illness.
Kettner said health officials are also watching to see if the virus finds its way into isolated First Nations communities where it could spread quickly. Many reserves have cramped living conditions and a high number of residents have chronic illnesses.
The Public Health Agency of Canada said as of Tuesday a total of 358 laboratory-confirmed cases of H1N1 flu have been reported in Canada.
As of Monday, half the cases involved people 22 or younger. The youngest is one and the oldest is 66. About half a dozen people have been hospitalized and one death has been reported.
Confirmation of the second swine flu case in the province comes as scientists at Winnipeg's microbiology lab scramble to develop a vaccine in time for the fall flu season.
Health officials in Mexico say the virus is sputtering out but disease experts say the pandemic scare is far from over. Influenza viruses can mutate rapidly and scientists have no idea whether the current strain will resurface or morph into a deadlier virus.
Meantime, the World Health Organization and leading influenza research groups are investigating unpublished claims that the new swine flu virus may have evolved in a lab, not in nature.
The agency was informed of the pending publication over the weekend by the author, a retired Australian plant virologist named Adrian Gibbs.
Gibbs, who studies the evolution of viruses, said the genes of the novel H1N1 look like they evolved at a faster rate than would have been expected if the virus had just emerged from pigs.
That raises the spectre of human error resulting in the accidental release of the virus, Gibbs suggested Tuesday.

Signs to watch
If you have flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, aches and tiredness, you are most contagious for the first week and could spread the disease for up to approximately a week once your symptoms start to appear. You should:
Stay home from school or work and limit contact with others to reduce the chance of spreading the virus.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth; cough or sneeze into your elbow or sleeve or use a tissue. Wash your hands frequently.
